Gill Gatfield – All Black

All Black 2008

Inside a pitted, blackened, almost colonial frame, an allegory of black painting and rugby plays out on a square ground.   Fifteen full blocks command the field, with six half blocks, the benched reserves.  In a checklist of black painting, a first fifteen also dominate the art field - from Malevich , Rauschenberg, Stella and Reinhardt in the USA and Europe, to Mrkusich, McCahon and Hotere closer to home.  The geometric grid provides a context of reproduction and multiples while the heat transfer properties emulate bodily functions like a post-performance sweat.
