Gill Gatfield – Silver Lining

Silver Lining 2009

Silver Lining refers to the potential of an underlying warmth behind a cool exterior.  Bending the rules of abstraction, a typically clinical art form, Silver Lining interacts with the environment, absorbing heat by day and releasing warmth by night.  The thin lined structure renders the 'lining' used in building construction, while the regenerative qualities of the work honour the practice known as 'lining' used in the conservation of historical painting.   Here the underside and the outside are compressed in a slender composition happily exposed to the sun.

Finalist, National Contemporary Art Award (Painting) 2009
