Natural Selection 2010
Finalist, Walker & Hall National 2D Art Award 2010
Permanently dormant, the grass painting combines three natural untreated materials: a sward of invasive Australian turfgrass, the finest weave Belgian Berge linen (also known as lawn), and kiln-dried Canadian cedar. Dry yet sensual, the work invites touch and exploration, conflicting with art conventions like 'do not touch' and rules for public spaces such as: 'Keep off the Grass'. The composition and title refer to survival and to the philosophy of art interpretation developed by Denis Dutton using Darwin's work on natural and sexual selection (Dutton, The Art Instinct, Oxford 2009).
