Gill Gatfield – Silhouette

Silhouette 2011

Smales Farm Station Public Art Award 2011

Located at the edge of a volcanic lava flow, beside a bustling city transport station, a vertical black granite monolith dissects a horizontal white glacier stone platform.

As the light shifts, Silhouette changes.  The shadow of the black cut-out on the white ground fuses the two planes.  The viewer is framed in the portrait cut-out and outlined in shadow on the white substrate.  Movement of people, buses, buildings, trees and sky are captured on the seamless mirror-polish stone.

Twice as high as wide, and twice the volume of solid form to that of framed space, the abstract composition reproduces again when it's own long shadow on the white ground is reflected in the black stone.
