Gill Gatfield – II

II 2011

II follows Not I, with two identical limestone I's looking out and back at the viewer.  A mathematical sign of addition develops in between the I's, denoting counting, a series or a sequence.  The 'half-plus' signs framed on either side reveal a pattern interrupted or held in mid-flow.   As a first person pronoun or symbol of a God-figure, the multiplied I-form defeats singularity.  In profile, the I's align and become one, creating a circle of counting, from one to two.
