Je suis 2010
A recombination of the letters 'I Jesus', Je suis extracts key elements from religious painting to develop a minimalist abstraction, recasting the traditional tripartite of Father, Son and Virgin Mary through colour, form and text.
French for 'I am', the monosyllabic Je suis omits the 'Am' from the definitive text: 'I Am', denoting an omniscient God in both biblical and art texts, and a symbol of a C21st 'me-generation'. Hung at body height, a slim opaque I emerges out of the blue to reflect and absorb viewer and surroundings. A reference to the Virgin Mary's robe, the cool blue surface encompasses a transactional 'I' in an omnipresent film.
