Cliffhanger

Waikato Sculpture Trust NZ — 2010

Shaped in barbwire and poised precariously at a cliff edge, Cliffhanger alludes to the film technique where a hero is exposed and left hanging in a hazardous situation. An hourglass, neither empty nor full, the barbed text is held under tension and waivers between heroic leap and authorial pause. Stretched and held in time and place, the I-figure proposes a screensaver or placeholder for the next act. If let loose, the spiked wire-I might recoil like a spring, abandon form and grip the audience in its entangled origins.
