In Absentia 2026

Italy

Against the silhouette of Monte Amiata, In Absentia rose in Piazza Matteotti, the historic heart of Montegiovi, a medieval hilltop village in Tuscany. Under the atmospheric pressure of the mountain, the sculpture's stone and glass were forged in light and air. Sunlight glanced across translucent planes and edges quivered in searing summer heat. At moments the virtual sculpture almost disappeared, its contours absorbed into the ancient stone of the village walls.

The sculpture's codified Acropolis marble met the time-worn stones of the piazza, bringing Greek origins into dialogue with Etruscan, Roman and medieval histories embedded in this Tuscan landscape. Beneath a village memorial to the fallen, In Absentia sent a circle of I-shadows cascading across the square, a line-drawn constellation of figures suspended between light and stone.

The activation opened sensory and perceptual thresholds between tangible and intangible worlds, where permanence and presence renegotiate their terms. In dialogue with Etruscan and Mediterranean inscriptions and mythologies, the digital glyphs held ancient resonances, invoking spirits, ancestral echoes, and other worlds. Located in the commons, In Absentia brought bodies, landscape and inherited histories into a shared perceptual field. Across shifting layers of reality, the ephemeral monument seemed both transient and strangely familiar, as though it had always belonged to the square.
